October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month – Simple Steps to Stay Secure

October 16, 2025

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and it’s a great time to review how you can keep your personal and SamCERA retirement information protected. At SamCERA, your online security is one of our top priorities – and with just a few simple actions, you can help keep your MySamCERA account safe and secure, too.

Extra Protection with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) was implemented on the MySamCERA member portal earlier this year to provide an extra layer of protection.

When you log in, you’ll be asked to verify your identity by entering a code sent to you. This helps ensure that even if someone gets your password, they still can’t access your account without that second step.

Beware of Fraudulent Emails and Calls

Cybercriminals sometimes pose as official representatives of businesses to try to steal your personal information. Be cautious if you receive calls, texts, or emails that:

  • Ask for your password, Social Security number, or bank information.
  • Contain links to unfamiliar websites or attachments.
  • Pressure you to act quickly or “verify” your account.

If you’re ever unsure whether a message or call is real, do not respond or click on any links. Instead, contact the company directly to verify it’s legitimate.

Tips for Protecting Your MySamCERA Account

  • Go directly to www.mysamcera.gov when logging in.
  • Use a strong, unique password that you don’t use on other websites.
  • Log out completely when you finish, especially on shared devices.
  • Keep your contact information up to date with SamCERA to receive important notifications.
  • Review your account regularly to confirm your personal and beneficiary information is correct.
  • Don’t share your login credentials with anyone – even trusted individuals or advisors.
  • Use trusted networks. Avoid logging into MySamCERA or financial sites when connected to public Wi-Fi.

Keep Your Devices Secure

  • Install updates for your phone, computer, and web browser as soon as they’re available.
  • Use antivirus or endpoint protection software to help detect threats.
